History 2011

  • North Korean dictator Kim Jeong-il has died. 17 Dec 2011(announced on 19 Dec 2011). He died too peacefully. He didn’t deserve it.
  • How Kim Jeong-eun is trying assassinate his stepbrother Kim Jeong-nam reminds me of how monarchy was like back in middle age. Several brothers, only one king, others- assassinated. Same for the ministers and officials who were either died by ‘accident’ or openly executed to weaken pro-Kim Jeong-eun group in NK.
  • Christmas. The most notable thing today: Skyrim 33% discount at Steam Holiday Sale.

K-ON!

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT
  • Bought K-ON! 1st cour DVD boxset. No, I don’t have Blu-Ray player. No, I don’t have PS3. No, I didn’t played Uncharted series. My life is not complete yet.
  • Korean dubbed K-ON! is being played in …ANIMAX? I cannot quite remember the channel. Still, it is being played on Korean cable TV. In late night when I cannot dare turn on TV w/o lowering its volume to the lowest. Thus, DVD boxset. I don’t like making a schedule to watch TV shows anyway.
  • First glance: K-ON! seems like a “Guitar and Rock Band for Dummies” transformed by Japanese into “Guitar and Rock Band for Otaku”. I just saw the first 2 episodes, and it seems like the anime will follow every footstep of how a high-school girl joins a rock band, buys and learn to play a guitar and finally learn to enjoy playing it.
  • Characters are stereotype in their finest and most emphasized form. It was even silly when I saw Yui running to school with a toast in her mouse. I mean, it’s like 2-decade-old cliche! But a cliche becomes a cliche because it usually works good.
  • Ep.2 was a good example of how to show realism in fantasized anime world. Yui quartet- imo Yui is the main character of those 4 girls- went to a musical instrument store to buy a guitar, and she gets fascinated with a Gibson guitar which costs 250,000 yen. It’s way too expensive and Yui is a beginner in guitar. If she buys it, it is unrealistic. So Yui and the others begin a part-time job, but Yui declines the money earned by the others because it seems not quite right. OK, this is realistic. And then? Tsumugi buy it for her! Because she is a daughter of a big company which has that very instrument store as its daughter company! Fine. it’s something you have to accept because K-ON! cannot just show them doing part-time job for all the episodes. But the most funny thing is that A STORECLERK RECOGNIZES HER! A MERE STORECLERK, RECOGNIZES, AT ONCE, A DAUGHTER, OF A FREAKING BIG COMPANY! I mean that’s just a typical deus ex machina. Well, that’s how anime works. I’ve been forgot that all the time…
  • Girls and/or realists seems to have allergic reaction to this anime because it portraits girl’s high school life just too unrealistic. After all, target audience of this anime is otaku, who is mostly he. And it is not a freaking documentary movie, it is an anime, so I think it is fine(yes, I am convincing ME!).
  • I am a Korean, and I know what it’s like to be a high-school student in Korea. For us, K-ON! is not just unrealistic… It’s freaking fantasy anime! I mean, it’s 23:00 after school. Yeah. I mean, some people actually get to join a band or something else, but they’re only a few and they go through a very very hard time to manage a balance between doing the band and studying for Univ. entry exam. Most of the students just stick to study.
  • Finished watching K-ON! on 24 Dec 2011(including 2 extra episodes)
  • The answer: Ui.
  • I’ll write more trivial details later.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

  • Bought Warhammer 40K: Space Marine on Steam Holiday sale. 23 Dec 2011.
  • Liked the demo, Loving the game.
  • Game is heavily focused on melee action. Creators tried to make a balance between melee and ranged action, but the game is melee-focused nontheless. And explosives.
  • Reminds me Oni, a Bungie action game. Heavy focus on melee, special moves to take advantage on tougher enemies, weapon swap etc. Oni was much harder game though.
  • Like how blood decal remains after a heavy fight.
  • I’m using an XBox360 gamepad connected to PC, and it is more fun in that way. Vibrations, focused keymappings, etc. A gamepad play has a consistant problem of decreasing accuracy in ranged weapon aiming, but the game is about melee action anyway.
  • It is not easy to find servo skulls. Didn’t find many till chapter 6.
  • I like how they managed to use both ‘recharging shield’ hp system and ‘non-recharging health’ hp system. And how to recover non-recharging wounds- by melee-executing enemies! Brilliant.
  • A need of melee-execution for hp recovery makes ranged actions much less favored. Because in ranged action, there is no way to recover non-recharching wounds.
  • Story- typical Warhammer 40K. Space Marines fighting against Orks and another force manipulating orks behind, secretly. I smell Chaos intervention(I’m just ‘out of sewer’ in this moment).
  • Finished scenario, Medium, 23 Dec 2011.
  • Thunder hammer was mighty.
  • Lascannon was cool.
  • I cannot remember much except shooting killing and smiting. Guess that’s all what it’s about.
  • Story: TYPICAL! Reminded me Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War vanilla scenario.
  • Blood Ravens. Relic loves Blood Ravens. Why are they even here? Go tend your pathetic system, y’know. There are almost every species of xenos to hunt

Dungeons of Dredmor: Music

  • IMO this is one of the best dungeon BGM I have ever heard.

Costume Quest

  • Bought on Steam Holiday Sale 21 Dec 11.
  • Such a heartwarming game! But I’m not familiar with Halloween custom, as its origin is Western holiday. If celebrating Halloween is as epic as what I experience in the game, I think we might need to celebrate it too! :D

Hardware

  • My headphone AKG K420 is gone. It was broken before, but I managed to fix it(w/ a big help from my father). Now it’s gone forever. 16 May 2010- 20 Dec 2011.
  • I bought Sennheiser PX 100-II.
  • I am temporarily using a cheap, nameless earphone and it hurts my ear literally. I really hope my new headphone arrives soon.

Morrowind: MOD

Steam

  • Steam Holiday Sale on 2011 is epic. They know not only how to sell products, but also how to hide their real intention under the sweetness of fun. And that fun is video-game-like fun which is very familiar to their major customers, not if every customers.

H. J. Freaks

  • KIM Hyun-mo, professional basist. And a crossdresser.
  • He became very (in)famous by Meg Whitman accidentally tweeting him on Oct 2010.
  • His best video so far, in my opinion, is this: [Working BGM]Played several Vocaloid songs[Base]. It has almost everything about H. J. Freaks: almost every bass tricks under his sleeve, perfect continuity and integrity of 17 different Vocaloid songs, playing 24 min long w/o resting, and his signature move: undressing. It is quite good for ‘beginners’, as it is not THAT shocking and he wears (relatively) proper clothes along the video. I guess it’s because the video was tributed to 2011 Tohoku earthquake(or Great East Japan Earthquake).
